Neil Hobden: The Power of Water – Managing the railway during times of water incursion

Neil Hobden (Infrastructure Maintenance Specialist, Network Rail Consulting) will provide us within an overview of several flooding and tidal events (and methods to mitigate their impact) from the UK together with an overview of recent events within Australia that may benefit from lessons learnt.

Neil is a Chartered Professional Engineer (Civil Engineering) of Engineers Australia, and Associate Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers. Whilst working in Australia he has supported several different clients with rail infrastructure and asset maintenance advice. Previously he has worked in the UK as a Track Maintenance Engineer and a multi-disciplinary Infrastructure Maintenance Engineer.

He will be joined by Mark Howells (Senior Lineside and Drainage Engineer, Western Route, Network Rail) who has extensive experience of enhancing asset resilience against the impact of water. He has also been involved with significant upgrade schemes, and will provide an update to solutions currently been implemented.

This presentation will be relevant to POD Sections 1 Emergency & Incident Management, 4 Managing Safety & 9 Railway Engineering, Maintenance and Renewal Management, and touch on sections 2 Performance Management & 3 Delivering Passenger & Freight Services.
