The North East Area Council invites members to our Family Day at the Elsecar Heritage Railway.
The railway has its roots in the South Yorkshire coal industry when, in 1850, the line was built to carry iron and coal from Elsecar to Mexborough. Sadly, the engines made their final runs in 1964 when Cortonwood Colliery closed. In 2006, Elsecar Heritage Railway was formed to breathe new life into the line. Originally running from Elsecar to Hemingfield , the railway is currently extending the track to Cortonwood. Now passengers can ride one mile of the line starting at Elsecar station, which is surrounded by industrial archaeology.
Attendees should make their own way to the Heritage Railway for 11:30hrs. Suggest travel on the 1018 train from Leeds, then approx 10 minutes walk from Elsecar station. Alternatively no 66 bus every 30 min from Barnsley Interchange, journey time approx ½ hour. Please state when booking if you are unable to walk, and we will endeavour to make alternative arrangements for you. We will be given an introduction to the railway, plus a behind the scenes look at the operating department. Refreshments will also be provided.
There will be the opportunity for you and your family to travel on this railway with services at 12:00, 13:00 and 14:00. You will be free to ride on the trains, and also take the opportunity to visit other attractions at the Heritage Centre, including a visitor centre, craft shops, the Newcomen Beam Engine. It promises to be a great day out, and guests can leave at whatever time they wish and the centre closes at 4pm.
