Event Details

The Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI), located in a central location reflects the fact that Manchester was the the world’s first industrial city. Visitors to this museum will encounter amazing objects and find out about the men and women whose ideas, born in Manchester, changed the world forever. The seven and a half acre heritage site houses three Grade 1 listed and five Grade 2 listed structures. It houses the world’s oldest surviving passenger railway station, and the world’s first railway warehouse, as well as several locomotives.

The textile industry, so pivotal to the industrial history of Manchester is also well represented, with a display of the machinery used to produce goods for the whole British Empire, and the wider world. Various other displays showcase different branches of engineering history, and in a separate Aviation annex, there is a comprehensive collection of iconic aircraft and helicopters, with simulators which the whole family can try.

In addition to these exhibits, there are many hands-on activities, including an interactive gallery which children, particularly, will find instructive and amusing, and there are often temporary set-piece events and demonstrations which the whole family can enjoy. There are adequate catering areas within the complex, where food and drinks can be purchased.

For those who are interested, we would look to round the day off with an optional meal at a nearby Indian or Italian restaurant, around 16:30.

This event is expected to be very popular, as admission to the museum is “free”, although the IRO will make a donation on behalf of our party.
